80s Hair

80s Hairstyles

Awareness

The 80s were a decade that brought a lot of creativity: fashion, music, hairstyles, art, cinema, etc. are a few examples.
One thing that amazes me is the 80s hair.

  •   Whether it was high school girls..............................

0. Random high school girl

  • ...or Rockstars..............................

1. Jim Gillette

2.Nikki Sixx

3. Tigertailz

4. CC DeVille

.............they all rocked it!

Frequent 80s hairstyles (rock n' roll look):
  • straight and tied in a bandana;
  • bleached (see pictures 1; 3, the dude on the left, and 4), both teased and straight;
  • multicolored (not so common, check picture 3, the dude on the right)
  • basically teased....a lot
  • perms (helps to create volume and curls if wanted)
  • and mixtures of those above e.g. bleached and teased
  • there were many who would just grow out their hair and wear hairspray, no teasing
Some facts

You may wonder how they always got to wear their hair like this, maybe you have tried some 80s look and it doesn't seem to hold (teased hair for instance). Or you're probably just curious. Or you want to start doing your hair like this. Well, there are a few things I wanna tell you.

  1. The reason they had such big hair and managed to hold it (even when it was windy, they sweat or any other circumstance) was because most rockstars don't shower often. Have you tried not to wash your hair for 3/ 4 days? What happens when you tie it and then let it down? Don't you see the trace of the rubber band? Maybe your hair even sticks up in a weird way... It's not magic it's grease! The greasier the more it holds. So it's obvious that if they didn't shower for a week or more their hair would be a complete piece of dirt (especially because rockstars are exposed to smoking environments, sweat from playing gigs and so on). Therefore it makes it easier to always have the perfect look because after all what is teased hair all about? Trying to look like a dirty rockstar maybe ;)
  2. 80s hairspray! I found hard to get a decent holding hairspray that really works. Most stuff that they sell at stores is crap and 'extreme hold' shit that doesn't even work. Well if you're lucky to live in a place where they sell decent hairspray, good! If not you have to try out many until you find one that suits you. You can also ask a friend or a hairdresser if they know any good brands. I use Syoss myself and it's the one that works better from all of those I found. One very known 80s hairspray is Aquanet and that shit works for all I've heard and checked with my own eyes. And I've heard that BigSexyHair works well too. But again you have to try what suits you best.
  3. The damage. Be aware that having 80s hair is not healthy. Perming, teasing, hair spraying and bleaching  is very bad for your hair and WILL, believe it or not, damage it. This doesn't mean you can't have the 80s rock look. If you're totally not into damaging your hair or if your hair is under some sort of medical condition treatment I suggest you go for other 80s rock looks like wearing bandanas or just cut it in layers idk. But this doesn't mean that you're gonna go bald or anything. It means that your hair will start to need more of your time, patience and attention (but you weren't thinking that doing such elaborated hairstyle would take you no time, were you?), possibly money as well since you need to buy the hair products and hair care stuff.

How to tease hair and take care of it?

As I've mentioned above you will need time, patience and attention. Layers also help with this look.

Here's some teased hair routine:

  1. Use any shampoo that works to your hair, the one you're already using works as well. Shampoo your hair and don't care about repeating unless you have some special hair care shampoo (again, I am not a professional and I don't know if this look suits someone with a special hair care treatment, ask a pharmacist or something first). I use conditioner myself and I think you should too because your hair will get fragile really fast if you don't. When applying conditioner try not to put a lot on the scalp, so it doesn't prevent your hair from holding the volume later. Sometimes I apply it with my head upside down too.
  2. When getting out of the shower I find it easier to just comb it right away than letting it dry first. So comb it with an adequate brush for your hair type and you can apply hair mousse if you want, some people say it helps holding the hair style, or some hair care product that works for you (I use one that helps my hair from freezing, not hair mousse).
  3. You can now blow dry it. Blow drying your hair is not bad for it so don't worry (I have recently been told this from a hairdresser). Blow dry it upside down so it creates volume. Some like to apply hairspray while blow drying it or after, I don't find it useful. You've gotta check out what works better for you.
  4. After blow drying it you have to let it cool off and do not tease it if it's still wet. That is very bad since you hair is more fragile when wet.
  5. After having it cool and dry you can straighten it if you will or just start teasing it right away. Grab a small section of your hair and backcomb it onto the roots. Be gentle for fuck's sake! If you're not in a matter of weeks your hair will be a complete shit! After having teased a section of your hair you can apply hairspray or not , depending on what works for you. Do not apply hairspray on your roots! It will not do anything, only damage it. You can tease only the crown part (I assume you have layers) or tease it all. I think it's unnecessary to tease anything but the crown part since it won't be showing! Okay now spray it, you can do this upside down or just however you like. Do not tease the ends of your hair only from half its lenght onto the roots. Do not apply hairspray on your roots.
  6. You may need to fix it during the day, depends on how good you are doing this and your hair type and so on.
  7. Rock it with some 80s glam outfit and you'll look smokin' hot!
  8. You should give your hair a rest.If you're on spring break or something and you won't get out much don't tease or apply hairspray. Just let it breath. If you don't have school breaks or anything of that sort just consider not doing this everyday. You can give it a rest on weekends and use a lot of cream and conditioner. You'll find your way to do it, just be careful and remember that this writer does this and knows what consequences it brings. See more tips below.

Tips for teased hair and other looks!

I don't advise you to dye your hair, it will damage it more and if you want this look to last you'll need to be careful. But if you do, give it more breaks and use a ton of conditioner to untangle it.

If you bleach your hair you shouldn't tease it.

Have you ever looked up to some picture of 80s rockstars nowadays? They hair is maybe short and not teased at all (bless Nikki Sixx though). They damaged it way too much.

I understand that if you're seeking for this hairstyle you may be a rock n' roll fan and  have that  'I don't worry about nothing no, because worry's a waste of my fucking time 'attitude..you know that you won't rock this look for a long time if you aren't careful or if you don't give your hair  a break once in a while.. you will have a lot of split ends and hair loss may occur (depending on how your hair reacts to this). It's up to you though!

I suggest you don't tease it on weekends and school breaks.

Perms are just not good for your hair, and this isn't necessary. Unless you want it then go for it.

You sometimes see pictures of 80s rockstars with their hair flat...they were doing the right thing,  letting their hair breath and giving it a break:

6. Nikki Sixx ( oops, Motley fans will understand this better than anyone else xD )

That's Nikki Sixx from the picture no2. And he was still rocking! The truth is you don't need a teased hair everyday to look like a rockstar. The right outfit does it. The hair is awesome of course ;) If you don't like to see yourself with flat hair, try wearing a bandana in your hair rest days or maybe a hat. Wearing hats is totally 80s and you will rock it too!

You can request me stuff you want me to write about or anything below in the comments' box. Rock On!
